Rats of Nilla Paws

I take much consideration when it comes to my rats, they are kept very clean and fed high quality food source, our choice of product is Oxbow for all the food and for the litter's bedding material. I know each rat by name and personality traits. They get treats for good behavior and fresh food as well. Each cage has hammocks and soft flooring, hides and a litter pan or two. My rats get swapped between cages periodically and keepers sometimes go on outings in a travel cage.

Our first litter was born in 2003. We raise mice and rats by handling them daily from birth. I studied genetics and different colors before I continued breeding. Our goal and aim is to breed friendly,  healthy and beautiful rats that make good pets and live an above average life span which would be a 4-5 year lifespan for the rats here. We are referring to our feeder bin rat named Neeka who suprised us all. We love rats because of their overlooked potential as companion pets. We believe in raising them carefully so that each rat becomes friendly and calm with humans. We breed occasionally and it brings warmth to our hearts. We currently work alone but have worked with local breeders in the past. We encourage people to share to our community so we can learn together.

Every day I socialize my rats so that when you begin the bonding process they are well acquainted with touch and can be tamed more easily. We do not reccomend leaving your rats alone in its cage to adjust but we encourage you to engage with the animal starting with short but good encounters letting them choose to come and go from their cage and to you as they wish eventually. Rats can and will enjoy being handled... There is many ways to become acquainted with your new pet, but an adjustment period to warm up to your house is a myth. However, every rat has it's own personality and will be getting acquainted with you at it's own pace. The more comfortable your rat is the better, rats are naturally cleaner animals. Rats are sensitive animals that pick up on your habits and tendencies... also let your new rat with some sneezing be- they are very curious animals and they smell lots of new things which can cause sneezing the first few days. Do some quiet things around the house and spend time next to the cage so your rats get a good sense of who you are.

Once you have purchased your new companions our page will invite you back for any questions or concerns should you have any. The doors of communication will stay open! We also hope to interest you in our Facebook group (Rats NP) located on our Facebook page.

I love giving all my time to my colony and I refer to them as the names given from the time I can tell them apart; I understand not all breeders do this but I have a small enough mischief and ample time to get names assigned. All rats not labeled as a hold backs will be here looking to become your new best friend. You can always ask for older rats to become a friend for your older rat. Please, do your part in the animal keeping community and research other places before getting a new pet. My experience also has been a path of research; I have been a rat breeder most of my life and I'm still learning.

I believe it's inspiring when you're not afraid to shine....

How I enjoyed to speak in class when I brought in my rats for some days during school, I was happy to share that my rats are clean animals who enjoy socializing. It was my duty to keep them comfortable and it was usually a short day but my anxiety was close to niltch. So for me to take away from it that all the students loved to work when we could be engaged with really cute and healthy families of rats.
In Southern Wisconsin we keep rats and various other pets in our home where they are kept clean and close to us for lots of attention! We spend quality time raising rats that are quite comfortable with being handled and they get to travel with us sometimes for sure.
We meet in public and we encourage you to ask any questions you may have about the care of our rats.
I have always loved rats and when I first got them as pets, Smokey and Ramses wiggled thier way into my heart forever! I learned about rats by interacting with my two every day, I remember being told to leave them alone long after keeping them out but I didn't listen and the rats never seemed to want to quit. I would let them run through my hands and then they would sit on my shoulder or head. Over time I started to train them for different behaviors (which means they were doing things I appreciate and I would treat them for it) and I had a pair of rats that I was very happy with. But they died after I went away for two weeks and I couldn't forgive myself for it. So I decided to become a breeder! I needed rats that didn't die after two years.I bred my first litter and then a few more all with my now husband'ssupport, learning how to bottle feed was exhausting. The first lesson I learned was to always have two females with litters unless you're prepared to raise an entire litter on your own. But those rats I raised were the most friendly rats I had ever.
We have raised and rehomed all the rats and are having a baby! It recently came to my attention that I neglected to set up notifications for messages on my website and for that I apologize. Please contact us through email or preferably our Facebook page in the future. We appreciate all the love and care our community gives to these rats! We hope to stay updated with pictures in our Facebook group, if you've adopted from us in the past please join us there! For future updates about our rats follow our page, we will be responding faster on Facebook.
